Refrigerators in Europe are required to have an energy label. In 2018 we conducted, in collaboration with GfK, and Right Brained, for the European Commission a study to inform the design of a new energy label for refrigerators. In addition, we developed a new house style that will be used for all future energy labels.
Draft pictograms were developed and different pictogram variants were tested among consumers in 7 countries. The design process included the development of different pictogram variants for the volume of the freezing zone, the volume of the extra fresh zone, the volume of the fridge zone, the volume of the pantry zone, and the indication for noise level. It was investigated how relevant the information is for the energy label and how well the pictograms were understood by consumers.
In addition, three house style variants for the energy label were developed. We investigated whether the new variants were trusted as the official EU energy label and to what extent consumers thought that these differed from the current EU energy label.
Figure 1 shows one of the proposed and tested energy label variants for refrigerators. Based on the results of the study a new energy label for refrigerators will be developed.
